Bede Chorus was established in Jarrow in 1993 by Conductor Ernest Young to provide the opportunity for singers to join with Bede Wind in concerts.
The choir is a four part choir (soprano/alto/tenor/bass) and has joined the band in many concerts in the north of England.
Both groups took part in an American tour in 1995, giving concerts in Boston, New York, Washington and Virginia.
For a ten year period the choir worked with opera singers Valerie Reid and Graeme Danby, performing at the Wallington Proms for the National Trust in Northumberland. Soprano Bibi Heal has also featured as a guest soloist on a number of occasions.
The choir and band also led nine Proms concert for cancer patient charity Daft as a Brush, as well as schools proms at the O2 City Hall, Newcastle.
Throughout the years the choir and band have raised money for various charities including Abbeyfield Homes, Children North East, Concern Worldwide (Ukraine), Freeman Hospital, Macmillan Cancer Relief, Rotary and Tiny Lives. Local churches have also benefited from fundraising.
The band and choir have a unique collection of music from Northumberland and Tyneside, which led to a recording in 1994.
In 2023 the choir moved to Gosforth which led to an expansion of membership (now at 60 members) with the choir meeting at Trinity Church, High Street, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. Rehearsals are held fortnightly on Tuesdays from 7.15pm to 8.45pm.
Membership is open to people who enjoy singing and friendship with other choir members.
The choir is self-financing, raising funds through subscriptions and concerts.
